Its been a long time hasn't it??

My cookie helper on Saturday. He did a super job, then took a nap, then woke up a terrible terror of a boy. I hate it when that happens! We had the annual Crisafi Cookie Day this past Saturday. I only made 4 kinds this year due to the fact that it really is only my family that eats these, and we can all agree my family certainly doesn't need all those cookies hanging around. I made chocolate chip, peanut butter kisses, craisin oatmeal and mint.

But we had a good time nonetheless. Later that evening we headed to the Fantasy of Lights, another annual Crisafi tradition and got Rocky's pizza. Yummy - I haven't had a pizza for weeks. It really is my favorite cheat food!

Its been a long time...

Its been a long time hasn't it??! There's a reason for that though. On May 12th, my nephew fractured his femur and had to be put into a hip spica cast, not once, but twice. For those who don't know, a hip spica cast starts at the chest and goes down to the toes. And depending on the doctor who does it, it can cover not only the broken leg but also the good leg.

My nephew's first cast covered both legs, but when we took him back in, the pediatric specialist re-broke the bone and put a new cast on, only going to his knee on his good leg.

Pretty terrible right?? Imagine a 3 yr old who can't walk, can't play, can't go outside, can't pee in the potty (after he finally learned how!!). Its been rough. He needs constant care because he can't get up to get anything. And he's pretty dang heavy.

He is doing ok though. The first week was really really REALLY rough. I stayed over at my dad's house to help. He would wake up with 30 minutes or so because he was having nightmares about falling down and hurting himself. It was really terrible. On top of that, it was almost impossible to get him to take any of his pain meds. We were able to trick him for a while but, as you know, that didn't last long.

Since the second surgery he is doing much better and he is no longer in pain. We bought a handy dandy wagon to cart him around so we are able to take him outside and we use this when we go to the doctor.

June 30th he gets his cast off!! The leg is going to be bowed and short, I just hope its not too bad that he has a limp. We can put a lift in his shoe until he outgrows the shortness of it but the bow would be there for years. This is why we had to have it rebroken to begin with. Without getting too graphic, the leg broke in two and the bottom piece was jutted out at a 30% angle. This is at the upper limit of acceptability. We decided as a family that we wanted the pediatric doc to try and get that straighter so his leg wouldn't be bowed at 30%. The dr was able to get it more straight and we'll find out when he takes the cast off how much the leg will be bowed out.

But for now, we try and keep him entertained each and every day. That's a big task when he can only sit up at an angle or lay down. Most of my free time has been spent over at my dads helping and relieving my sister so she can work a little or just get out and have dinner away from the house.

So to all my buds who I have been neglecting over the last month or so, I do apologize. You know me, I hate being out of the loop. I hate not being at all the events, but alas, what else could I do?! Hopefully now things will go smoothly and after June 30th we can return to normal, at least somewhat as he starts walking again. (He's pretty excited about that!). Thanks for all the well wishes and gifts. I know he appreciates them as do we.

Sarasota, FL

I traveled to FL to visit my godfather. He lives in Sarasota, FL. We completely lucked out with the weather and had some nice days so we could lay out on the beach. I could have used another 3-4 days there but it was a nice little get away.

The group at our last dinner. My godfather John and his wife gail, Andrea and myself. This nite I had crab stuffed tilapia. OMG, it was delicious! I luv getting FL seafood. Its so good and fresh.

Aside from a super unflattering quadruple chin picture, I tried my first oyster while in FL. It was steamed -- that's the only way I would do it! It wasn't too bad. I would probably never order them on my own but it wasn't too bad. Chalk it up to trying new things with food -- which for me is a pretty big deal!
